Eatonville Welcomes Our Russian Guests

For the past several years, Irina Morozova, Ph.D., Professor of Comparative Studies, Literature Department, Institute for Philology and History, Russian State University for the Humanities, Moscow has attended ZORA! Festival. This year, she is accompanied by two of her students. Meet Anton Panov and Anna Smirnova.

From Anton Panov: Human history knows many towns that sprang out of nowhere, experienced its golden age, and then safely gone. There are, however, other

cities, which seemed to have existed forever, although they are not favored by fate. They lead a quiet and measured life, sometimes breaking through the invisible curtain that separated them from the rest of the world, leaving behing only an artistic image, the general view of which was not connected with its counterpart. One of these towns is Eatonville, Florida.

From Anna Smirnova: The first time I’ve learned of Zora Neale Hurston was three years ago at my American literature class. Professor Morozova suggested us to make an international project, dedicated to Hurston’s novel “Their Eyes Were Watching God.” It was unique experience. . . . Generally there is a special atmosphere in Hurston’s Eatonville. It’s created by African-American culture and African-American Vernacular English. Another important part of it is nature. People in Zora’s Eatonville live very close to nature and that enrich [es] their knowledge of the world. . . . All these things depict Eatonville as half-real half-magical and [a] very nice world.Monday January 28
